What Is a Break-Even Price?

Your break-even price is the minimum amount you can sell a product for without losing money — the point where revenue exactly covers every cost involved in getting that sale: the product's cost of goods (COGS), the platform's selling fee, shipping, and any advertising spend attributed to that sale. Price below it and every sale actively loses money, no matter how much volume you move. This calculator adds up all four cost components and works backward to show you the exact floor price, plus what price you'd need to hit a specific target margin above that floor.

Why Sellers Underestimate Their True Break-Even

The most common pricing mistake online sellers make is pricing based only on product cost and platform fee, forgetting that shipping and ad spend are just as real a cost per unit — especially on platforms where advertising is effectively mandatory to get visibility. A product that looks profitable on a simple cost-plus-fee calculation can quietly be a loss-maker once realistic shipping and ACOS (advertising cost of sale) are factored in. This tool's profit curve view shows exactly how margin changes as you adjust price, so you can see the real trade-off before setting your listing price.

Frequently Asked Questions

What costs should I include to get an accurate break-even price?▼
At minimum: your product's cost of goods (COGS), the platform's selling/payment processing fee, outbound shipping cost, and your average advertising spend per sale (if you run ads). Leaving out any one of these is the most common reason sellers think they're profitable when they're actually not.
What's the difference between break-even price and target margin price?▼
Break-even price is where profit is exactly zero. Target margin price adds your desired profit on top of that floor — for example, if you want a 20% margin, the calculator shows you the price that achieves that, not just the price that avoids a loss.
How does advertising spend affect my break-even price?▼
If you run paid ads to drive sales, a portion of your ad budget should be attributed as a cost per unit sold (commonly estimated from your ACOS or average cost-per-conversion). Ignoring this is why some sellers who look profitable on paper are actually break-even or losing money once ad spend is factored in.
Is this useful for platforms other than Amazon?▼
Yes — the underlying math (COGS + fees + shipping + ad cost = break-even) applies to any e-commerce platform. Just input the actual fee structure for whichever marketplace or storefront you're selling on.
